This started after reading the BBC’s piece on a couple doing this nearby to us — it prompted a lot of questions, and I could see both plusses and minuses. We need to keep local rural communities together, but there’s a whiff of a land grab in some environmental subsidy schemes: they can end up being used mainly by people who already have money and capital, for what’s really more inheritance planning and consolidation than stewardship. Against that, our soils genuinely do need protecting — from drought, erosion, flood, and nutrient leaching — and that work has value whoever ends up doing it. One thing worth holding onto: enhanced land can usually be brought back into food production later if it needs to be — but only if the husbandry skillset to do that still exists locally. That’s the part that worries me most, and it’s why this page tries to hold both sides rather than pick one.
