she's in good shape really with only 1 real 'nick' since her last refit/refresh a year ago see ( 7 below) Her spars are looking good as is the mast -- all were triple treated with Epifanes last time and are still looking great. i had put epoxy on the very foot of the mast then varnished copiously and it has stood up really well, especially as she has been out on her mooring all year this time around. She just needs her insides cleaned and her duckboards painted.(now done!)
Jos is a Drascombe Dabber Number 119 built by Honnor Marine in Devon we think in 1978;
she is therefore well used, but well loved/cared for…
we bought her in oct 2009, and have been enjoying learning to sail in her.
She has been moored on Coniston, and we have not sailed her in seawater yet.
She comes with a T trailer, cunningly modified to allow for better aligning when retrieving, using an extra light axle/wheels at the end.. (primed and painted in 2012) with breakaway cable, roadworthy, except the tyres will need replacing at some stage as their centre tread is worn
(would be fine for short distances or for getting her home)
she has an excellent reliable lightweight 3.5 Mercury 2 stroke outboard, serviced annually--
she has a cockpit spray cover and her Mast and spars have been varnished with Epifanes.
Her gunwhales are UV Teak oiled.
She has red sails with no repairs.
she does have a boom, but we have never fitted/used it; we much prefer her loose footed and friendly!
we have fitted dual central jib sheet fairleads aft, on the centre case that allow for easier single handed sailing if desired, using a shared aft jammer, and a lightweight 2:1 main sheet and new Tufnol block, custom made by Classic Marine
she has a bilge pump, anchor/chain and good long oars.
we may have to sell her now that Eva the Lugger has arrived...
A great learner boat and more, she is ready to go, and would be sailed today, only that we now have a new Lugger on the mooring
We recommend her as an excellent kindly manageable affordable introduction to Drascombe sailing, and she is a delight to setup, maintain and sail, and we will be loathe to see her go! but pleased if she goes to a loving home.
now sold
"The Drascombe sails very well in light winds, but can easily handle strong winds. she can sail with just the jib and mizzen, if it is too windy, although many advocate using a simple reefed mainsail, but with the full sails she can move at quite a pace. She's never been even close to tipping and this stability makes her an ideal family boat – we often sail her with youngsters and woof clambering around!
The centre plate retracts fully into the hull giving a very shallow draft for launching. launching on a slipway can be done this by yourself (with the aid of the car).
the boat is easily sailed single handed when sailing –
the Mercury outboard is 3.5hp and is light and reliable and in good condition.
she has a retractable bowsprit and bumpkin"
